ZIMBABWE A cricket team coach Douglas Hondo is confident of positive performances by his charges after the squad was trimmed down to 15 yesterday with all-rounder Tino Mutombodzi set to lead the side against the touring South Africa A team.
The former national team assistant coach has been working with a squad of 22 for the past fortnight and selectors yesterday decided to settle for a blend of youth and experience.
Mutombodzi captains the side that has experienced players like former Test opener Tinotenda Mawoyo, Regis Chakabva, Timycen Maruma, Shingirai Masakadza and the upcoming talents such as 20-year-olds Jaylord Gumbie and Tarisai Musakanda and Victor Nyauchi, who turned 23 this month. The selectors have also given another chance to fast bowler Trevor Garwe and Prince Masvare. Hondo says he is looking forward to stiff competition for places.
Zimbabwe are set to play South Africa A in the first four-dayer starting this Saturday at Harare Sports Club before action moves to Bulawayo for the second match at Queens Sports Club starting on July 15.
Hondo said the upcoming tour of New Zealand for two Test matches with the Chevrons later this month should a big incentive for his players.
