THE Minister of Welfare Services for War Veterans, War Collaborators, Political Detainees and Restrictees Cde Christopher Mutsvangwa will this weekend meet ex-combatants in Matabeleland as part of efforts to address their concerns.
Tomorrow, Cde Mutsvangwa will meet war veterans in Bulawayo following divisions caused by the recent elections that ushered in new leaders accused of supping with ousted former chairperson Jabulani Sibanda.
War Veterans Deputy Minister Retired Colonel Tshinga Dube said Cde Mutsvangwa will meet ex-combatants from Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South and Bulawayo.
The Minister who was initially expected in Bulawayo today is now visiting the province tomorrow and is expected in Lupane on Sunday.
It could not be established immediately when the Gwanda meeting would be held, but it would be during this weekend.
“On Saturday, he will be in Bulawayo at Entumbane where he is expected to address all the freedom fighters before proceeding to Gwanda and Lupane. He is on a visit to meet war veterans, solve squabbles and address their welfare,” said Rtd Col Dube.
Recently, some war veterans in Bulawayo petitioned Cde Mutsvangwa calling for the ouster of the new executive led by Cde Cephas Ncube.
The group led by war veterans elder Cde George Mlala, alleges the executive was not constitutionally elected. However, Cde Mutsvangwa endorsed Cde Ncube’s executive.
Bulawayo war veterans secretary for information and publicity Cde Japhet Phuthi yesterday said war veterans’ widows and widowers were also expected to attend the meeting.
“The minister would like every war vet, war detainee, restrictee and war collaborator to attend. Hopefully all members will bear with us on the change of dates, which were necessitated by the commitment of the Minister on other assignments,” said Cde Phuthi.
“We expect all members to participate and get first hand information on issues pertaining to their welfare”.
Cde Phuthi warned “divisive elements” against attending the meeting.
