LONG-distance athlete Steven Muzhingi will be the major drawcard at this year’s edition of the annual JM Busha 54 races at Alex Sports Club on May 25.
Muzhingi was part of the people who attended the launch of the 2018 edition of the tournament which will this year incorporate two other sporting disciplines – golf and cycling.
The tournaments will be held on Africa Day with athletics and cycling at Alex Sports Club while golf will take place at Chapman Golf Club.
Muzhingi said he will use the event as a build-up to the Comrades Marathon which will come two weeks letter.
“I am glad to be here and I will be part of this year’s marathon where I will compete in the 41km race.
“I am looking forward to the race and I hope to bring many children from my former school in Chivhu to be part of the race. People used to look down upon me as I practiced and they thought athletics could not give someone a living but now they appreciate. I am a celebrated someone back in my rural area so I will give some young kids, who are following in my footsteps, an opportunity to be part of the JM Busha 54 races,” said Muzhingi.
Misheck Gondo, the JM Busha races chairperson, said they were happy to have sporting disciplines this year and looks forward to some successful events.
“We are happy to unveil these new sports codes for this year’s edition of the JM Busha 54 races in which we will also introduce two other sports codes in golf and cycling.
“Sport unifies people and help to bridge some of the social gaps among people hence the establishment of National Peace Pledge Marathon and Peace Pledge Games,” said Gondo.
Athletics will have 5km, 10km, 21km and 45 km races.
