Mzilikazi High celebrates 60 years of excellence…with diamond jubilee, annual speech and prize-giving day

MZILIKAZI High School yesterday celebrated a major milestone with its Diamond Jubilee and Annual Speech and Prize-giving Day, recognising the success of its past students in various fields, including academics and sports.

The event, themed “Mzilikazi High at 60: Investing in the Education of Our Children, The Role of Parents in the Fulfilment of the Heritage-Based Curriculum,” was graced by Justice Nicholas Mathonsi, an alumnus who served as the guest of honour. The significant occasion marked 60 years of the school’s commitment to educational excellence.

The celebration brought together students, teachers, alumni, and distinguished guests to reflect on six decades of achievement. As the school community gathered to honour its legacy, the event showcased outstanding student talent and recognised academic excellence, reaffirming Mzilikazi High School’s dedication to nurturing future leaders.

The event commenced with the stirring notes of the national anthem, uniting all attendees in a moment of patriotic pride. Following this, the audience recited the National School Pledge, reaffirming their commitment to excellence and integrity. Pastor Tawanda Masukume then led a heartfelt devotion, setting a reflective tone for the celebrations.

This was followed by captivating presentations from the drama club, poetry club, and choir, each showcasing the immense talent and creativity of Mzilikazi High School’s students. Their performances added vibrancy to the occasion, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the school community.

The school head, Mr Bhekobuhle Dube, warmly welcomed the guests, students, and staff to Mzilikazi High School’s Diamond Jubilee and Annual Speech and Prize-giving Day. In his address, he proudly highlighted the school’s impressive track record of producing accomplished individuals who have made their mark in various fields. “Notable alumni, such as Teenage Hadebe, who have gone on to achieve greatness both locally and internationally, are a testament to our school’s commitment to excellence,” Mr Dube remarked.

He emphasised that Mzilikazi High School’s heritage-based curriculum has yielded remarkable results, producing prominent figures in academia, sports, and arts.
“Our school’s focus on innovation, research, and academic rigour aligns perfectly with the Zimbabwe National Development Strategy 1,” said Mr Dube. He encouraged students to continue striving for excellence, embracing the school’s values and traditions.

Child President, Pious Nleya, delivered an inspiring speech during the ceremony, emphasising the importance of hard work among his fellow scholars. As one of the prize recipients, he expressed his joy at the occasion.

“Today I’m so happy that we are having the Speech and Prize-giving Day, which shows that students are working hard in academics. We must continue to strive for excellence so that when we write our O- and A-Level exams, we will come out with flying colours.”

Justice Mathonsi, expressed delight in returning to his alma mater, Mzilikazi High School, where his remarkable journey began. “I am thrilled to be back where it all started, and I proudly declare myself an alumnus of this esteemed institution,” he said.

As he officiated the prize-giving ceremony, Justice Mathonsi acknowledged the significant role Mzilikazi High School played in shaping his life. “It is my absolute honour and privilege to be part of this momentous occasion, as this school is credited with moulding me into the person I am today. I am proud to call myself an alumnus of Mzilikazi High School. This school laid the foundation for my success, and I am grateful for the experience,” he said.

He also encouraged the school to continue excelling in all aspects. The meaningful ceremony acknowledged the dedication, creativity, and excellence displayed by Mzilikazi High School’s students and staff.

The grand finale of the event featured two inspiring speeches from the outgoing head girl, Precious Choluwa, and the head boy, Ayanda Ncube. Precious’ speech highlighted her experiences, gratitude, and accomplishments during her tenure as head girl.

She also shared words of wisdom, encouragement, and advice to her fellow students, as well as expressed her appreciation for the opportunities she had. Ayanda’s closing remarks emphasised the importance of leadership, teamwork, and school spirit. He reflected on the past year’s achievements, challenges, and lessons learned, while also looking forward to the future and the new leadership team.
