A total of 27 officials have concluded a World Athletics (WA) Technical Officials Education Certification Systems (TOECS) course held at White City Stadium in Bulawayo.

The main objective of the course which got underway on Monday is to educate technical officials on how to interpret as well as apply WA technical rules in both track and field events.

WA-certified lecturer Enias Nhoro conducted the course attended by 27 participants drawn from around the country.

“I had a group of 27 participants from all over the country, which includes 23 females and four males. This course teaches officials how to manage competitions and also the interpretation of the rules and their application during competitions.

“We dealt specifically with the current rules. Our athletics rules change annually and this group is the first to be dealing with the 2024/25 changed competition rules hence they became very relevant in the system and the most important people to be used during the 2024/25 competitions,” said Nhoro.

He said the course was a huge success. “During the course, we went through all the aspects of the athletics events that include the field and track events.

“We will have time to deal with each event in terms of the changed rules. We are also going to touch on the changed rules in road races and importantly in the starts,” said Nhoro.

Meanwhile, the Bulawayo Athletics Board (Bab) is set to honour its best performing athletes this year at a function slated for December 22.

The event will be held at the Palace Hotel. Athletes will get awards in categories such as Best Long Distance Athlete, Best Athlete in the senior women and men’s and Best Middle Distance Runners.

Last year, long-distance runner Isaac Mpofu and sprinter Denzel Siamulela walked away with Best Senior Male Athlete and Junior Athlete of the Year awards. Amanda Msongelwa from House of Champions Athletics Club won the Most Promising Athlete accolade. The Most Promising Technical Official award was given to Jill Mutambirwa.

Northlea High School was named the Best Athletics Club while Elicah Ngorima and Manuel Mpofu received Long Service awards. — @innocentskizoe
