THE National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe are expecting to hold a Level One technical officials course at Prince Edward School this week. The course is scheduled to start tomorrow and will run up to Sunday with 25 participants from across the country expected to take part.
It will be conducted by the International Association of Athletics Federations qualified lecturer, Aeneas Nhoro.
NAAZ president, Tendai Tagara, said the course will cater for umpires, track and field judges and starters and they will be focusing on the rules and regulations of the sport.
“It’s part of our preparations for next year especially as we are targeting the Zone Six Championships we expect to have high quality officials,” said Tagara.
“Mainly, they are going to focus on the rules and regulations of athletics.
“We are looking at judges, umpires, track and field judges and starters, that’s the group of people we are training.
“After the course and the certification ceremony on Sunday, the results will be sent to IAAF for verification. We are expecting 25 participants from all provinces in the country because the numbers are determined by IAAF. We have also included members from Nash and Naph so that they have the know-how of the technical side of running athletics.” Tagara said they had won a huge battle just to hold this course.
Zimbabwe will be hosting the 2014 Zone Six Youth Games and they will need a lot of qualified officials. “We have been fighting to have this course form IAAF, these courses are difficult to get because usually they concentrate on the coaches’ courses and not the technical officials.
“This is the opportunity for us and we are happy we are going to run such a course.
“NAAZ is funding the programme but we got assistance from ZOC,” said Tagara.
