The National Aids Council of Zimbabwe (Nac) in collaboration with Youth Creative Ideas, held their HIV Prevention Soccer and Netball Leagues awards on Wednesday.

The awards came after a contest between six football teams that featured FC Chelsea, United Refineries, Zwakala Zulu FC, Impande Youth Centre, Makhandeni United and Makokoba Shooters.

Makokoba Shooters won the football tournament while in netball How Mine emerged as the champions in the contest that took place on World Aids Day a fortnight ago.

All teams received accolades for participating in the tournament.

a?We are grateful for the work which was done by our organiser Mthokozisi Ndlovu and his team. We really had a lot of feedback and people got empowered on HIV sexual reproductive health information. The winning team is the team that looks after their health because you can only play as long as you are healthy,a? said Bulawayo Nac provincial manager Sinatra Nyathi.

Nyathi added that they were looking forward to establishing a national league.

a?This league is very critical for us as Bulawayo Province. I was hoping that with time, we might grow into an inter-provincial league and eventually become a national league. We have started the initiative and we hope other provinces join us,a?said Nyathi.

At the tournament, various services that included HIV testing, voluntary male circumcision, TB screening, BP check, dental services, blood donation and family planning were also offered.

a?People got to know their HIV status as testing was for free, so what we are saying is that as a league we are joining the whole world in trying to end Aids by 2030,a? said Nyathi. . .
