COULD Nadia Nakai be failing to make an impact on the SA showbiz scene?
Last year, the Saka Wena hit-maker, whose mother is Zimbabwean, claimed to be one of the best rappers in that country but was mysteriously not included on AKA’s remix of Baddest in which he had called upon the best female rappers in SA.
She was, as a result, bashed on the Internet for not making the cut besides calling herself the best in the rap game. So bitter was she after up-and-coming artistes, Fifi Cooper, Gigi Lamayne, Rogue and Nomuzi Mabena were featured on the track that she composed her own remix of the song in which she sang: “Why these girls tryna copy me, they in Mvela, I’m in the Premier League” to which people responded by suggesting that it was her who in fact was in the Mvela league.
To get back at AKA, Nadia went on to join his rap rival – Cassper Nyovest’s record label.
Now, the undeniably talented artiste is in the midst of another social media storm after it was claimed that she promised to give fans at an upcoming music event – Uncensored 2 in East London – a meet and greet opportunity where she would charge a whooping R1,200.
This did not go down well with many music lovers who belittled her for the VIP package which included meeting‚ having lunch and hanging out with the female rapper.
Offensive tweets started pouring. “Who’s Nadia Nakai? Why does she want to be greeted at R1,200?” tweeted Tryson Biller.
“I’d buy me a shoe of 1.2k and walk right past Nadia Nakai,” tweeted Luzario M.
“And then you wake up to Nadia Nakai’s dreams. R1,200? Are they growing hybrid weed at Family Tree?” questioned Karabo.
But, her new management – Cassper’s Family Tree record label – were quick to back her up explaining that the VIP package was a misunderstanding.
“Nadia is performing at the event at the end of the month but the event organisers set a VIP package which included a meet, greet and lunch with the artists.
“They never mentioned Nadia’s name, but she was the one who people naturally reacted to‚” her manager, Bash told TimesLive.
“As her management, we agreed to the event, but not to the meet and greet and we asked them to remove the package which they have since done”.
Bash added that Nadia was upset over the backlash she received on social media.
But, judging by the two incidents, Nadia should by now know where she stands in South African showbiz. At least she is guaranteed that more people now know her because of the Internet buzz caused by the R1,2k VIP package.
For a fact, she is far from singing ‘mama I made it’ and may want to pay more attention to stiff competition from Fifie Cooper who proved her worth in the rap game by scooping numerous Metro FM awards.
Together with her boss Cassper, the two may need to look for ways to step up their game if they want to remain relevant in the competitive South African music industry. 2016 does not seem to be Cassper’s year as he is fast being overtaken by new rappers such as Nasty C, but mostly, Emtee whom he recently watched taking most awards at the Metro FM awards. One wonders if he will be able to fill up the Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg which has a sitting capacity of 40,000.
