SEVEN years after Aston Villa paid more than £11 million for him, Warriors captain Marvelous Nakamba has arrived in the western Greek city of Agrinio looking for what matters most at this stage of his career: regular football.
The 32-year-old midfielder has joined Panetolikos on a free transfer following the expiry of his short-term contract with Sheffield Wednesday in England. His deal runs until June 2027.
“Marvelous Nakamba has signed a contract with our team until June 2027,” Panetolikos said.
“He is an active international player for the Zimbabwe men’s national team. We welcome him to our team.”
The Greek club highlighted Nakamba’s 71 Premier League appearances, a measure of the experience he brings after a difficult end to his time in England.
Nakamba joined Sheffield Wednesday in February after leaving Luton Town, but made only five league appearances during his short stay at Hillsborough.
Wednesday coach Henrik Pedersen nevertheless praised Nakamba’s attitude and application in training.
“Marv is a fantastic guy, and he has trained really well and tries to do all the right things,” Pedersen said.
A source close to the midfielder indicated before the transfer that his priority was not the size of the club, but the opportunity to play.
“Marvelous wants to get back on the pitch, play regularly and enjoy football again after a difficult period,” the source told Zimpapers Sports Hub, as negotiations progressed.
“He had opportunities, but he wanted the right project. At this stage of his career, regular football is more important than anything else.
“He still believes he has a lot to offer both at club level and for Zimbabwe.”
Panetolikos do not carry the profile of Greek giants Olympiacos, Panathinaikos or AEK Athens.
For Nakamba, that matters less than the chance to become an influential player again.
Greece becomes the fifth European country in which he will play professionally after France, the Netherlands, Belgium and England.
His European career began when he left Bantu Rovers for French side Nancy as a teenager in 2012.
He went on to win the Dutch Cup with Vitesse Arnhem and a Belgian league title with Club Brugge.
His 2019 move to Aston Villa took him into the Premier League.
His greatest success in England came at Luton, where he played a key role in the club’s promotion to the Premier League through the 2023 Championship play-offs.
His tenacity made him a favourite among the Luton supporters, while his influence extended beyond the pitch. Former Luton chief executive officer Gary Sweet described Nakamba as both a quality footballer and an important presence in the dressing room.
“Marvelous was a huge part of our success, a special character who came to add real quality at the time we needed it to help us to promotion,” Sweet said.
“He was a pleasure to have around the club, always smiling, even through some tough times personally with injury.”
Fellow Warriors international Tino Kadewere is also in Greece with Aris Thessaloniki.
Nakamba says he is settling into his new surroundings and ready to establish himself at Panetolikos.
“Delighted to have embarked on a new challenge,” he said.
“New environment, new aspirations.
“I am already adapting and seek to establish myself on and off the field in the right ways.”
