Actor Cadrick “Khekhe” Msongelwa has said his recent win at the National Arts Merit Awards (Nama) in Harare on February 28 will boost his profile both on stage and on screen.
Msongelwa took home the Outstanding Actor award for his role as Squealer/StoryTeller/Mr Jones in Zi Animal Farm, beating stiff competition from Elroy Takunda Musiiwa (Benjamin, Zi Animal Farm) and Ronald Sigeca (Prophet, These Humans Are Sick).
Zi Animal Farm is a local adaptation of George Orwell’s classic Animal Farm, reimagined with a distinctly Zimbabwean voice. The production blends experimental direction, live music, and movement to reflect local social realities. It was reproduced for Zimbabwean audiences by Savanna Trust, directed by South African Bongani Benedict Masango, and produced by celebrated arts practitioner Daniel Maphosa.
Msongelwa, presented with the award on stage by theatre friend Nobert Makoche, credited the win to the collective effort of the cast and crew.
“God is good all the time. I want to thank everyone who was part of this production. My fellow nominees are all talented and deserved this recognition. Special thanks to Bongani Masango, the entire cast, Savanna Trust, NACZ, and the Nama organisers – this award belongs to all of us,” he said.
Meanwhile, Zi Animal Farm is set for a national tour, with dates to be announced by Savanna Trust.
