THE country’s 10 provinces converge at Goromonzi High School for a two-day Nash 17-and-under basketball tournament which begins today. The extravaganza will also provide the platform where national Under 17 selectors can pick teams for the annual Cossasa games scheduled in Botswana next month.
Each province is being represented by a select side in both the girls’ and boys’ categories.
Harare province are the defending champions for both sections but last season’s first runners-up in the boys category, Mashonaland East, have since stoked the flames as they have warned the holders to brace for a grueling challenge.
Head-in-charge of basketball for the host province, Abisha Mujeni, who is also the Goromonzi High School headmaster, said all was set for the extravaganza.
“We are ready to host all the provinces. It is always good to be entrusted with the role that we have been given. We are looking forward to a successful tournament.
‘’We have a lot of good players in the country and it is always good to watch them in action. We are obviously in for a big treat as players will also be competing for national team jerseys.
‘’That will add value to the event,” he said.
His sports director, Tendai Gwaza, said Harare province should expect a tough ride.
“We didn’t do very well in last year’s edition of the competition in the girls’ category. We worked tirelessly to address our shortcomings and we believe we are ready to roar.
“We have picked the best players in the province whom we believe will deliver the title to Mashonaland East.’’
National Head-in-Charge of the game, Thompson Katanda of Mazoe High, will lead a team of experts in the selection of the best players for both girls and boys who will represent the country in the Cossasa Games in Botswana next month.
