THE Zimbabwe Handball Federation will use the NASH provincial and national finals to select a team that will represent the country at the first edition of Young Masters Cup invitational tournament to be held in Cape Town, South Africa, next month.

The event is scheduled to run in the Mother City from August 14-16 with the team expected to leave the country on August 13.

The event will see both Under-16 and Under-18 boys and girls teams taking part in the tournament that is being organized by the GeBe Education and Sports Foundation, a German non-profit organisation, in conjunction with the Western Cape Handball Association and Cape Town’s Young Masters Handball Club.

Josiah Sithole, the head of delegation of the Zimbabwean team for the Cape Town tour, said they have upped their preparations and soon a team will be put in place for the tournament.

“We are progressing and we are happy that the NASH competitions will help us in coming up with a team,” Sithole said.

“The good thing is we are not limited to clubs only this time as there are ongoing NASH handball tournaments going on which will help by coming up with a strong team.

“The selection process started at provincial levels and we are hopeful that this gives us a good assessment of all players.”

The Under-16 NASH handball national finals will be held on July 18 at Mount Selinda in Manicaland while the Under-20 finals are set for July 31 to August 1 at Kwekwe High School in Midlands.

“We will have a good platform considering that most Under-20 players can be eligible for the Under-18 sides.

“We are going to have some strong sides as this is the first edition of the event so we need to make a lasting impression there,” added Sithole.

Victoria High School of Masvingo have also indicated that they would like to send their girls Under-15 team to the same tournament in Cape Town next month.

Amon Madzvamuse, the ZHF president, said other local schools who are interested in taking part in the Young Masters handball tournament are also free to approach them.

The inaugural tournament is expected to be graced by teams from other African countries such as Zambia, Mozambique Lesotho, Swaziland Botswana and Namibia.

The tournament will soon be followed by an international coaching course that will be conducted by a top German handball instructor Marlo Bathazan.
