National Arts Council mourns Kanengoni

National Arts Council of Zimbabwe expresses its sincere condolences to the Kanengoni family, and arts fraternity as well as the nation at large on the untimely passing on of Alexander Kanengoni (65) on April 12 2016.

Kanengoni was a prominent talented writer, journalist and war veteran who inspired many budding writers through his works. Some of Alexander’s publications include the novels: “Vicious Circle” (1983), “When the Rainbird Cries” (1988), “Echoing Silences” (1997) “Writing Still” (2003) and many others.

Kanengoni trained as a teacher and taught briefly before going to join the liberation struggle in 1974. After Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980, he was enrolled at the University of Zimbabwe and studied English Literature. In 1983 he was employed by the Ministry of Education and Culture as project officer responsible for the education of ex-combatants and refugees. In 1988 he moved to the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Service and worked there until 2002, when he became a farmer and a part-time newspaper editor. At the time of his death Alexander Kanengoni was the Deputy Editor for The Patriot.

The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe will always cherish his passion as a writer. Indeed, the arts industry has been robbed of a talented and dedicated artist.
