National women’s cricket team shine

GABORONE. – WHILE all the focus was on the just-ended Triangular One-Day International series which included Australia and South Africa, the Zimbabwe national women’s cricket team has also been flying the country’s flag high. The ladies were on a week-long tour of Botswana to compete in a four-nation tournament involving Namibia, Mozambique and the hosts, in the capital, Gaborone. The Zimbabwe women capped off a successful tour by winning all four of their 40-over matches.

All-rounder Josephine Nkomo was named the player of the tournament for her 85 runs with the bat and five wickets with ball. Top order batter Chipo Mugeri finished as the highest run-scorer with 123 runs, including an unbeaten century against Namibia.

The tour was ideal for the country’s senior players as they will be faced with similar conditions when they compete in the next International Cricket Council Women’s Regional World Cup qualifiers, to be held in Uganda in December.
