Nature’s helpers at your doorstep

THE modern, eye-catching Sichel service station in Kadoma is a welcome sight along the Harare-Bulawayo highway.

Its contemporary design is impossible to miss; it makes the refuelling facility stand out.

The green space in front is inviting. Tired travellers will find its allure irresistible.

Greening your surroundings can be made easier with the right plant choices. Native plants provide a valuable resource for bees, butterflies and other insects.

To improve soil health, opt for nitrogen-fixing legumes like peas, which work in harmony with microorganisms to enrich the soil. Another great plant to add to your garden is the marigold (tagetes patula). It adds a vibrant colour to the landscape and also does wonders to the soil.

Marigolds are a gardener’s ally in the battle against pests. They effectively combat soil nematodes, a common plant enemy. Additionally, marigolds attract beneficial insects like ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies and wasps, which prey on aphids and other harmful pests.

As a trap crop, marigolds lure slugs and aphids away from the desired plants, making them easier to control.

The stinging nettle can accumulate nutrients in the soil and bring them closer to the rhizome.

The comfrey (symphytum officinale) is a resilient perennial with deep roots that improve soil structure by breaking up compacted clay and bringing essential nutrients to the surface.

The snake plant (sansevieria trifasciata) excels at purifying the air by absorbing carbon dioxide, while the lavender is renowned for its ability to repel both mice and mosquitoes.

Annuals like petunias deter pests, and zinnias attract beneficial insects such as ladybugs to help control garden pests.

Zinnias, sweet alyssum and cosmos attract bees and other insects that help spread pollen.

The pot marigold (calendula officinale) is a valuable addition to any garden.

Its vibrant blooms help repel pests like asparagus beetles and tomato hornworms. While it can attract aphids, these can be easily managed by removing and destroying infested plants.

Dahlias attract butterflies that aid pollination.

Grow mums (chrysanthemum morifolium) to keep away pests.

And the list goes on, revealing a plethora of plant choices to revitalise your environment.
