TRY Ncube knows one win doesn’t change a season, but it could spark something bigger.
After ending a frustrating three-game winless run with a narrow 1-0 victory over GreenFuel last weekend, the Highlanders coach wants his side to string together back-to-back wins for the first time in over a month. And that mission begins on Sunday against Scottland FC at Rufaro Stadium in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League showdown.
“It’s difficult, just like any other game we play,” Ncube said ahead of the trip to Harare. “But it’s also a game that can motivate our players. We know they have big-name players, but we also have young boys who know what’s at stake and are eager to make a name for themselves.”
That balance between grit and growth is becoming Bosso’s hallmark under Ncube. The team is still very much in transition, but there are glimpses of cohesion, even if the results haven’t always reflected it.
“We’ve done fair over the past three games. Yes, we’ve not picked up the results we wanted, but we’ve seen more positives than negatives from our performances. The players are really trying hard to get us the results we want,” said Ncube.
The return of several key players could also help tip the scale in Bosso’s favour. Mafios Chihweta, Tendai Muvuti, Achford Faira and Marlvin Hativagoni are all back in full training, boosting squad depth.
However, Ncube will be without the suspended duo of Arthur Ndlovu and Mason Mushore.
“These are two good players who’ve been playing well, but we have able replacements who can come in and fill the void,” he said.
Highlanders’ task won’t be easy.
Scottland FC are brimming with belief after pulling off one of the biggest upsets of the season, a 2-1 away win over title contenders Ngezi Platinum Stars last weekend. That result snapped a frustrating run of form and offered coach Tonderai Ndiraya some much-needed breathing room.
Still, Scottland’s home form remains patchy. They’ve collected just four points from their last four matches at Rufaro, and Ndiraya will be looking to reassert home dominance.
To that end, the club made key reinforcements during the mid-season transfer window, signing Terrence Dzvukamanja, Khuda Ike Myaba and Moses Shidolo to sharpen their attacking edge and tighten the midfield.
But for Ncube, the focus isn’t on Scottland, it’s on Highlanders finding rhythm, trust, and belief in the grind.
“The preparations are going well and the boys are raring to go. Everyone is training perfectly. When you’re not getting the results you want, it’s always worrying, but a lot of work is happening behind the scenes to make sure we get the players we want,” he said.
Sunday at Rufaro will be less about reputation and more about resolve. Bosso want momentum. Scottland want a home revival. Both need the points.
