Ndlovu elected Zone 6 volleyball boss

ZIMBABWE Volleyball Association (ZVA) president Frederick Ndlovu was elected the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) Zone 6 president at the organisation’s congress held in Algeria last week. Zone 6 comprises mainly Sadc countries and Ndlovu also joins the continental CAVB board by virtue of his new post.

Amr Elwani of Egypt retained his post as CAVB president. Ndlovu shrugged off the challenge of Botswana’s Daniel Moloid, beating him by seven votes to three to win the Zone 6 presidency.

He said his election means that there would be more opportunities for Zimbabwe in terms of volleyball development. “I’ll be Zone 6 president and a CAVB board member for the next four years and this therefore means that there’ll now be more opportunities for Zimbabwe unlike in the past as we now have direct representation.

“What it means is that we’ll be among the first to access opportunities that come from the continental body,” said Ndlovu. Meanwhile, the ZVA was chosen as the model national federation for implementation of the Dr Ary Graca’s Africa Dream Project, which is meant to produce future winning national teams that can compete against some of the top volleyball playing nations in the world.

The project has comprehensive monitoring and evaluation instruments in place designed to take athletes through training, which should churn out athletes capable of making an impact at high levels.

The project focuses on various key aspects of sport, which include talent identification, development, high performance, life skills and use of sport as a tool for development for athletes between eight and 14 years.

Four centres in Harare, Bulawayo, Masvingo and Midlands are implementing the programme with the association’s second vice-president Enias Kondo being the project director, while Artwell Gororo, Vulindlela Moyo, Aaron Mutede and Itsanang Abu-Basutu are the centres’ coaches.

For their outstanding implementation of the Africa Dream Project, good corporate governance and activities, the ZVA was also awarded a medal of excellence at the CAVB congress.
