NEWLY crowned Matabeleland North provincial Jikinya Traditional Dance competition winners, Ndlovu Primary School will represent the province at the national finals in Masvingo on Friday.
Ndlovu Primary school from Lupane district beat contenders Clonmore (second position) from Bubi and Makwati from Nkayi (third position) in a tightly contested competition held at Lupane Community hall last week. The school had its choreography to thank as they shone when they performed the theme dance, Hosanna. However, it was Clonmore that had the best rhythm with the school’s drummers being declared the best as they imitated the rainmaking rites which are still performed at Njelele shrine to this day.
Ndlovu Primary School walked away with $500 while Clonmore received $300 for taking second position. Clonmore was closely followed by Makwati who were awarded with $200.
President of the National Association of Primary School Heads, Cynthia Khumalo said the competition which is sponsored by Delta Beverages provided a platform for the promotion and preservation of tradition and culture through dance and song.
“We thank National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) and Delta for setting up such competitions which aim to promote the preservation of our culture through dance and song. Government prioritises this area and as such, the new curriculum will include traditional dance and performing arts,” said Khumalo.
NACZ provincial coordinator, Clara Nkomo said the traditional dance competitions were meant to foster a sense of belonging and appreciation of culture, particularly on the young generation.
