LEGENDARY footballer Peter Ndlovu is still the substantive Zimbabwe Under-23 head coach and is expected to lead the youngsters when the 2016 Olympic qualifiers begin in three months time. There has been widespread speculation that the former tear away striker had severed ties with the national association Zifa after apparently abandoning the national team and preferring to go to a preseason training camp in Ghana with his new paymasters, cash rich Absa Premiership outfit Mamelodi Sundowns.
Ndlovu has been employed as the Pitso Mosimane coached Brazilians’ first team manager.
“He is still the head coach of the Under-23 side because we have not been told anything to the contrary. During our last board meeting we resolved to keep him there and asked our chief executive officer Jonathan Mashingaidze to liaise with him and hear what his schedule is like,” said Zifa board member responsible for competitions, Bennedict Moyo.
Asked whether they had any plans in the event that the Makokoba born Ndlovu decides not to take up his national duties, Moyo said Warriors assistant coach Callisto Pasuwa will take over the reins and be assisted by Under-20 coach Jairos Tapera.
The two are assistant coaches to Warriors gaffer Ian Dibango Gorowa.
There has also been talk that Chicken Inn assistant coach Mkhuphali Masuku could be given the Under-23 job.
The present Zifa board has seen a high national team coach turnover with an average of a new coach in every six months.
