ZIMBABWE’S senior netball team, the Gems, received a timely boost yesterday when Nedbank reaffirmed their commitment in ensuring the side is fully primed for the 2027 Netball World Cup Qualifiers.
The Gems have been in a month-long residential camp polishing their preparations for the African qualifiers.
Yesterday’s visit by Nedbank executives provided the perfect tonic to lift the team’s mood and confidence ahead of departure.
They are scheduled to leave for Nairobi, Kenya, on Tuesday next week, where they will battle for the two available World Cup tickets at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani Indoor Arena, from September 19 to 26.
Under the guidance of coach Ropafadzo Mutsauki, the Gems have been drawn in a tough Group One alongside African powerhouse South Africa, hosts Kenya, Botswana and debutants Nigeria.
Uganda, Malawi, Namibia, Zambia and Tanzania make up Group Two, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals.
During a courtesy call at the Gems’ camp in Harare, Nedbank pledged financial and logistical support to the team for the Qualifiers, to ensure smooth participation at the crucial tournament.
“We are really excited to be part of the Gems’ journey once again as they chase a third successive World Cup qualification,” said Nedbank Managing Director Betty Murambadoro.
“It is a journey steeped in history and we do not want to miss a single minute of it. “That’s why we are here to emphasise our continued support through the qualifiers.
“We have ensured that their needs are covered.
“We will also have representatives travelling to Nairobi to cheer on the team, while others will be watching and rallying behind them on big screens back home.”
Murambadoro commended the Gems for flying the national flag high.
She noted that Zimbabwe are currently ranked 11th in the World Netball Rankings and fourth in Africa, behind South Africa, Uganda and Malawi, who occupy the top three spots on the continent. “They are not only representing the Nedbank brand but they are also putting Zimbabwe on the global map and this is something we are immensely proud to be associated with,” Murambadoro added.
“The Gems bring hope to every girl out there, including those in marginalised communities. What we are seeing here sends a powerful message that with discipline and support, anything is possible.
“We are here to back them so they can play to their full potential and inspire the next generation of netballers out there.”
Zimbabwe Netball Association secretary-general Racheal Tinorwirashe described the partnership with Nedbank as a major step toward ensuring the Gems are tournament-ready.
