Nedbank Zimbabwe managing director, Dr Sibongile Moyo, has announced her departure from the financial institution after nearly six years at the helm, marking the end of a transformative tenure defined by aggressive growth and institutional stability.
Dr Moyo, who was appointed to the post on April 1 2020, at the onset of the global pandemic, informed clients of her exit in a statement, noting that she is moving on to a “next challenge.”
During her leadership, Nedbank Zimbabwe underwent a significant strategic shift, transitioning from a period of restructuring to one of high-performance growth. Dr Moyo highlighted that her tenure was focused on building “institutional resilience” and achieving “phenomenal earnings” for the bank.
“We focused on you, the client, and service excellence,” Dr Moyo said. “We built institutional resilience and stability, recorded phenomenal earnings, operational efficiencies, capital accretion, leading brand recognition and positive culture.”
Under her stewardship, the bank successfully navigated a volatile macroeconomic environment, characterised by currency fluctuations and shifting regulatory frameworks. The bank’s performance in recent years has been bolstered by increased capital accretion and a strengthened brand presence in the competitive Zimbabwean Tier-1 banking sector.
Dr Moyo expressed confidence in the bank’s future trajectory, stating that the institution is “poised for its next chapter of growth.” She further assured clients that the current management teams remain committed to maintaining the solid foundation established during her term.
Her departure comes at a time when the banking sector is increasingly leaning towards digitalisation and green financing, areas where Nedbank has sought to distinguish itself. While Dr Moyo did not specify her next destination, her exit concludes a notable chapter for the bank, which saw it consolidate its position as a key player in the country’s financial services industry.
The bank has not yet named a successor, though an announcement regarding an acting or substantive Managing Director is expected in due course.
Dr Moyo is the current Bankers Association of Zimbabwe president.
