Nees and the Warriors’ World Cup gamble

ZIMBABWE’S World Cup dream hangs precariously in the balance, with all hopes now resting on the shoulders of Michael Nees, the German tactician tasked with nothing less than resurrecting the Warriors’ faltering campaign. The next round of qualifiers looms large, presenting a daunting challenge for Nees, with crucial encounters against Benin on March 17, swiftly followed by a showdown with Nigeria.

Currently languishing at the bottom of Group C, with a mere two points from four outings, Zimbabwe’s qualification hopes appear slender. Yet Nees remains steadfast, convinced that even the faintest glimmer of possibility is worth pursuing with unwavering resolve.

However, as the Warriors grapple with the arduous path to World Cup qualification, questions arise: should Nees perhaps shift his focus towards laying a robust foundation for the future, beginning with the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon)?

Since his appointment, Nees has inherited a campaign that appeared to be floundering under the stewardship of previous managers.

Having already secured qualification for the 2025 Afcon, the Warriors now face the delicate balancing act of pursuing World Cup glory whilst nurturing long-term development.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has unveiled a 39-man provisional squad for their forthcoming 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe. Currently positioned fifth in Group C, Nigeria will first encounter Rwanda in Kigali on March 21, before facing Zimbabwe on March 25 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.

The squad presents a blend of seasoned veterans and emerging talents, featuring Stanley Nwabali, Adeleye Adebayo, William Ekong, Calvin Bassey, and Olaoluwa Aina, alongside key figures such as Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, Ademola Lookman, Victor Osimhen, and Simon Moses.

Despite the formidable challenge that lies ahead, Nees refuses to yield. “Like us, Nigeria have their backs against the wall; they are wounded lions seeking to roar back after a sluggish start. It will be a gripping encounter, and Nigeria are beatable in Uyo,” Nees asserted ahead of the crucial match.

The Warriors simply cannot afford to squander any more points if they are to bolster their chances of securing a coveted place at the global football spectacle.
