THE resumption of football remains a topical subject among the various stakeholders, and a campaign by footballers has attracted mixed reactions from fans.
Earlier this week, the Footballers Union of Zimbabwe released a video, captioned “Bring back football,’’ in which they appealed to the authorities to act.
A number of players from different clubs, took part in the video where they shared their views and how the current suspension of the game, has affected their livelihoods.
Chicken Inn’s Ian Nekati said things have not been well since football stopped.
“With the way football stopped, things have not been okay. We were surviving by selling chickens,’’ he said.
“At times, selling groceries from the boot of our cars, while hiding from authorities. That can not be life.”
His comments were captured by different international media houses.
And, reacting to a story on Nekati’s comments, on South African website KickOff.com, fans expressed mixed views.
One of the fans, going by the name, ZeeMan, encouraged Nekati to formalise his business with the authorities.
“Even when the league (starts), I don’t see the need to stop selling chicken. Just get the required documentation and grow that business.”
Another reader, going by the identity GBDaenerys Targaryen, also agreed.
“There’s absolutely nothing wrong with selling chicken. He should’ve been advised correctly and joined Cape Town City.’’
Some appeared to be mocking the player, for settling for Chicken Inn, after some South African clubs, Cape Town City and Baroka, had shown interest in his services.
“You should have joined Baroka, instead of Chicken Inn, now you selling chickens.
“Chicken is a business, everyone eats chicken,” posted another fan, who went by the name, Unbanned Goat.
ZIFA have submitted their application for resumption of the game, in which they proposed to start training on February 22.
Sports and Recreation Commission acting director-general, Sebastian Garikai, acknowledged receiving the application.
He said they should be in a position to give feedback by next week.
