OVER 250 participants are expected to grace this year’s edition of the Zimbabwe Chess Open, which comes to life in the capital on Friday.
The tournament is once again being bankrolled by Minerva Risk Advisors, a development that has been welcomed by the Zimbabwe Chess Federation president Collen Tongowona.
“We are grateful to Minerva Risk Advisors for the support they continue to render to chess.
“With such partnerships, chess has a bright future,” said Tongowona.
Minerava Risk Advisors have bankrolled the Chess Open to the tune of US$10 000, with the winner in both the men’s and women’s categories of the tournament walking away with US$1 000.
Ten international players are expected at the Open.
“We are anticipating a very competitive field and some exciting battles,” added Tongowona.
“A competition of this magnitude requires international participants to help boost the competition standards, and I am happy to report that we have just that.”
Zimbabwe’s highest-ranked chess master, Rodwell Makoto, headlines the competitive field.
Emerald Mushore, who won last year’s edition, will be aiming to defend his title in the men’s category, while Linda Shaba hopes to do the same in the women’s category.
