THE Zimbabwe Wrestling Federation (ZWF) is launching a bold new initiative to revive professional wrestling in the country, with federation president Jonathan “Mr Mat” Muvingi leading the charge.

In partnership with the Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board (ZNBWCB), the ZWF has roped in the newly formed Zimbabwe Wrestling Club (ZWC), tasked with recruiting fresh talent and organising crowd-pulling events. The first major step will be a high-profile wrestling showcase set for May 26, though the venue will depend on registration turnout.

Wrestling in Zimbabwe has been dormant for years, with the last notable exhibition held at Copacabana four years ago. The ZWF now hopes to reignite interest by engaging schools, communities, and corporate sponsors to fuel the sport’s growth.

“We are thrilled to bring wrestling back to Zimbabwe,” said Muvingi.

“The Zimbabwe Wrestling Club is officially open, and we encourage everyone — wrestlers, fans, and sponsors — to join us. Like any other sport, wrestling needs financial backing to thrive.” The ZWC plans to scout new talent through nationwide registrations, offering both in-person and online sign-ups. In a game-changing move, the ZNBWCB has also mandated that all boxing events in Zimbabwe must now feature at least one professional wrestling match to increase visibility.

“We’re intentionally creating more opportunities for wrestlers,” said ZNBWCB CEO Priscilla Kadungure.

“By working with boxing promoters, we can provide a consistent platform for athletes.” Unlike boxing, professional wrestling blends athleticism with theatrical performance, demanding rigorous training in choreography and storytelling factors Kadungure admits contributed to its decline locally.

ZWC representative Tapiwa Mukombe remains upbeat. “This is for anyone who loves wrestling, whether as a competitor, coach, or fan,” he said. “We’re building a pathway for Olympic and professional opportunities.”
