NEW: Boost for Harare Children’s Home

EXACTLY five months ago, on August 17, 2023, a fire broke out at Harare Children’s Home and destroyed goods worth thousands of dollars.

About 40 children lost their belongings, ranging from clothes, books and uniforms, among others, as a result.

Harare Children’s Home director Mrs Maria Sithole immediately sent a plea for help to well-wishers.

Harare businessman Mr Brighton Ushendibaba, who is a director at Premier Soccer League side Simba Bhora, heard the plea and chose to celebrate his 37th birthday at Harare Children’s Home last Friday.

He donated foodstuffs, soaps, toiletries and sanitary wear.

Harare Children’s Home acting director Mrs Tsitsi Chikumbu hailed the donation.

“Today is a special day for us,” she said.

“Our organisation depends on donations and it is through Good Samaritans like Mr Ushendibaba that we survive.”

Harare Children’s Home was established in 1911 and is the country’s oldest home.

It currently takes care of 80 children who range from new-born babies to 21-year-olds.

“The home started off with about 10 children identified at that time as homeless during World War 1 and Spanish Flu, when parents perished and children found themselves homeless.

“Since then, the home has survived on well-wishers and people around us.”

Mr Ushendibaba pledged more support.

“Where I come from, I was raised in a way that taught me to love my neighbours. Even in the Bible it is written that we should share the little that we have.

“That’s why I have decided to celebrate my birthday this way. Children at this home need our support and I will keep supporting them,” he said.
