THE Chitungwiza business community has come together to support grieving families affected by the tragic Manyame Bridge accident that claimed 17 lives along Seke Road on Tuesday.
The horrific accident, which involved a Chitungwiza-bound commuter omnibus and a haulage truck, was officially declared a national disaster by the Government.
In response, the Chitungwiza Business Community Trust, led by its chairperson Mr Tendai Mareya, on Friday launched a compassionate rive to assist the bereaved families.
“As the business community, we saw it befitting to contribute and extend our helping hand to the affected families,” said Mr Mareya.
On Friday, the Trust donated mealie meal and food supplies to the families of three victims.
“As businesspeople, we were saddened by the accident that took 17 lives in our community.
“These people are our customers and relatives. This is where we stay, so we were affected both personally and professionally.
“Today, we managed to give three families of those who were affected by the Chitungwiza disaster.
“The Matare family received 15 bags of 10kg mealie meal; the Gondo family, who lost two members and had one survivor, received 13 bags; while the Silia family, which lost one member, received 11 bags.”
Additionally, 66 bags of 10kg mealie meal were donated to Chitungwiza City Council.
Mr Mareya also indicated that cash donations would follow, depending on identified needs.
“We will continue helping the remaining families either in cash or foodstuffs,” he added.
The Trust has pledged to ensure that every affected family receives at least 11 bags of 10kg mealie meal as part of its continuing support.
