A Chiweshe man has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for assaulting his pregnant lover Tarisai Mandevana during a dispute after she eloped.

Brian Kambanje (33) of Musandisora Village under Chief Makope was convicted of assault on his own plea of guilty when he appeared before Concession magistrate Mr Joshua Nembaware on Thursday.

Nine months of his sentence were conditionally suspended for five years.

The remainder have been suspended on condition he completes 210 hours of community service at Chaona Primary School.

It is the State’s case that on December 23, 2022, Tarisai’s aunt Modester Mandevana, her sister Irene Mandevana and their colleague Enita Chimbai escorted her to his house with the intention of leaving her because of the pregnancy.

On arrival, they told Brian about the issue, but his wife could not stomach the news and fought with Irene.

However, when they were about to leave, Brian picked up a stick and assaulted Tarisai several times on the back and chest.

She sustained injuries on her chest and left shoulder.

She, however, made a police report, leading to Brian’s arrest.
