In a bid to harness art talent among young people, a new college in Chegutu will enrol students of various talent on scholarship.
Westview College will take art as an integral subject and nurture talent in different art disciplines.
The college’s co-director Professor Lovemore Togarasei who is a lecturer at the University of Botswana said it was important that they groom leaders including artists at the school.
Togarasei said they will enrol about 15 students who have talent in different art disciplines on scholarship.
“We have seen several people earning a living through art and as we open this college we wish to support the talent of our children.
“That is also another way of grooming tomorrow’s leaders,” said Togarasei.
He said they wanted to have a state-of-art theatre that allows children to work on different art activities.
Recently several stakeholders including National Arts Council of Zimbabwe director Elvas Mari who is one of the directors of the school, representatives from Chegutu Rural District Council, chiefs and headmen were invited to have a tour and observe development made so far.
Parents welcomed the decision
saying it was important to nurture talent.
“We need to support the talent our children were born with and that is good to have a school with resources that support that,” said Daniel Mukatiri a parent.
Mari said they have already appointed a music teacher who is a holder of master’s degree in music as one of the teachers of music.
“We have several teachers including the headmaster who have an experience in the sector and as children take their day-to-day curriculum activities they will have also time to do art,” he said.
Chief Ngezi and village head Muzambi graced the event and hailed the directors for their effort to impart cultural knowledge to the coming generations.
