ZIMBABWE’S comedy industry is set for a significant revival after comedian Trust K decided to launch a dedicated comedy club, Punchline ZW, to give local performers a permanent stage and audiences regular entertainment.
Harare-based comedian Trust Muranda — who performs as Trust K — founded the club, which is scheduled to debut on November 28.
It aims to become a permanent home for stand-up comedy in the capital, shifting the local industry away from its traditional reliance on sporadic comedy nights, corporate functions, and independent promoters.
Muranda, who has spent two years navigating the local circuit, stated that while Zimbabwe possesses abundant comedic talent, it lacks the structured platforms necessary for performers to refine their craft and build sustainable careers.
“The name of the club is Punchline ZW, and we have decided to launch it to create a consistent home for comedy in Harare,” Muranda said.
“For a long time, we have had the talent but not enough stages, so this is our contribution to the industry. We want to build a platform that promotes Zimbabwean comedy, gives comedians a place to hone their craft and grow, and provides audiences with an opportunity to experience live comedy regularly.”
He added that the venue is also designed to serve as a safe space for patrons to unwind and support their mental well-being through laughter.
Punchline ZW seeks to replicate the foundational culture of globally renowned venues like Los Angeles’ Comedy Store, New York’s Comedy Cellar, and London’s Comedy Store, which historically served as vital training grounds for established international comedians. Muranda noted that the Harare club will distinguish itself through consistent monthly programming featuring prominent local and international acts.
“We plan to stand out through consistent monthly shows, bringing in big names in comedy, both local and international, while positioning ourselves as a club that brings joy, laughter and good times,” he said.
The 90-minute launch event on November 28 will be hosted by Trust K and headlined by two-time National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) nominee Mbongeni Ignatius alongside Tanya Alex. The line-up also features comedian Kingsley, a surprise act, guest artiste Raiel, and supportive appearances by digital skit-makers @Kitso.36 and @Wessy Issa.
“Yes, we are having a full show running for one hour and 30 minutes, which I will host,” Muranda confirmed. “It will be headlined by two-time NAMA nominee Mbongeni Ignatius and will also feature Tanya Alex, Kingsley, a surprise comedian, and Raiel as our guest artiste. We will also have appearances by fellow skit-makers @Kitso.36 and @Wessy Issa, who will be coming through to support the launch.”
The inclusion of online content creators reflects an industry trend of translating digital popularity into live performance value. Following the launch, Punchline ZW plans to host shows on the third Saturday of every month, utilising a rotating roster of signed house comedians.
“We will also have two open-mic slots.”
The open-mic segments are designed to provide emerging acts and spoken-word poets with critical opportunities to test material and build audience rapport, establishing a sustainable talent pipeline for the local entertainment sector.
