The giants have fallen and new contenders to the crown are gearing for the final show down. Yes we are in the countdown to the Copa Coca Cola 2015 finals. There are six days to go before the whistle blows for the first games of the finals for Under-16 Boys and Under-17 Girls at Gifford High School.
The Delta Beverages-sponsored tournament under the Coca-Cola brand will be on July 18 and 19. Join Cool Lifestyle there as we capture the tears and smiles. Who will be the new champions?
Unfortunately the big guns were not able to open happiness with Coke as other schools have upped their game and showed that past glory remains there while the future is for any one who dares to take it on.
Oriel Boys, Hippo Valley, Churchill, Mzilikazi, Lord Malvern Cyrene, Vainona, Pamushana and Chidyamakono are some of the schools that had become brand names in the tournament that have not made it into the finals this year.
The girls’ trophy and a prize of $3 000 will be fought for by the following high schools: Magwegwe – Bulawayo, Dinyane – Matabeland North, Selonga – Matebeland South, Nyamauru – Manicaland, Masase – Midlands, Sodbury – Mashonaland West, Furamera – Mashonaland East, Seke – Harare, St Francis – Mashonaland Central and Mwenezi – Masvingo.
For the boys’ teams Mpopoma – Bulawayo, Tsholotsho – Matabeleland North, How Mine – Matebeleland South, Dewure – Masvingo, Nemakonde – Mashonaland West, Mutare Boys – Manicaland, Guinea Fowl – Midlands, Bernard Mizeki – Mashonaland East, Prince Edward – Harare and Rujeko – Mashonaland Central will slug it out on the patch for the ultimate prize of $6 500.
Yes, Cool Lifestyle also wonders why the boys are getting more money than the girls.
Does it cost less for the girls to prepare for the tournament, we wonder.
Big up to Coca Cola for promoting football for girls in schools. But we would like to go on record today and ask them to make it even better by having equal prizes for all the winning teams to really show that they are gunning for an even playing field.
