THE Joshua Nkomo Legacy Cup has been rescheduled to February next year after Highlanders refused to play in the proposed two legged-event.
Jabulani Hadebe, the Joshua Nkomo Foundation chief executive officer said he was disappointed because of the efforts he put in securing clearance from the match from the Zimbabwe Football Association as well as the Premier Soccer League.
When the go ahead was given by PSL late on Wednesday, Highlanders then informed the organisers the following day that they had released their players soon after their EasyCall Cup final match against Chicken Inn which they won 1-0 and it was impossible for them to play in the proposed two legged fixture.
Hadebe indicated that the match had initially been scheduled for March this year but the match clashed with the Bob Super Cup semi-final between Highlanders and Caps United played at Barbourfields.
“I am really disappointed because I spent a lot of time at the Highlanders offices, they did not tell us they were not prepared to play only to tell us when the clearance had been done. We have no option but to postpone to February next year, the first leg is set for Sunday, 7 February in Harare and the second leg a week later at Barbourfields,’’ said Hadebe.
Hadebe said the clash between the two most supported football teams in Zimbabwe was a charity event meant to raise funds for the Joshua Nkomo Museum in Matsheumhlope.
