AS the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) rapidly reshapes global investment and corporate strategy, Zimbabwean practitioner and researcher Dr Prosper Mutswiri has published a seminal new book that offers a tailored framework for emerging markets.
Titled “Adapting ESG for Emerging Market Growth: Towards an Integrated Contextual ESG Implementation Model”, the book, printed by Midlands State University Press is set to be officially launched at the upcoming ESG Africa Conference in South Africa, where Dr Mutswiri will present his integrated model to continental policymakers, business leaders and sustainability experts.
At the heart of the book is the argument that ESG frameworks must harmonise profitability, social equity and environmental stewardship, a triad Dr Mutswiri describes as the balance between profit, people and the planet.
“This book is not just theoretical; it’s a call to action for businesses and governments in emerging markets to adopt practices that balance economic growth with environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and governance alignment,” Dr Mutswiri said.
The publication also draws clear links between ESG implementation and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), arguing that emerging economies will play a decisive role in shaping the future of global sustainability.
“Ensuring ESG frameworks are responsive to local realities is essential for the credibility and effectiveness of the global ESG project,” he said.
Professor Moses Chimbari from the Durban University of Technology in South Africa, who penned the foreword, said: “This book arrives at a moment when the global sustainability agenda is at a crossroads. The need for effective and inclusive sustainability frameworks has never been greater.”
Sanguitlal Popatlal, Chief Director of Legal Services and Compliance in the Office of the President and Cabinet, described the work as an authoritative and thought-provoking contribution that sharpens the discourse on governance and compliance, providing practical and strategic guidance for strengthening institutional integrity and public sector accountability.
Ephraim Chawoneka, Chief Executive of the International Credit Rating Agency (ICRA Zimbabwe) and Principal Managing Partner of STF Capital, also weighed in.
“Prosper Mutswiri delivers a seminal contribution to ESG discourse, advancing a nuanced, context-driven model that will shape policy, investment, and corporate strategy across emerging markets. This book offers a critical and much-needed perspective on ESG, bridging global standards with emerging market realities in ways that are both analytically sound and practically implementable,” he said.
“This book represents a monumental contribution to our understanding of how ESG can be effectively implemented in our unique context,” said the book’s editor and Midlands State University Dyke Publication Director, Dr Umali Saidi.
With ESG criteria becoming a defining trend in global finance and corporate governance, Dr Mutswiri’s work positions Zimbabwe at the forefront of this critical dialogue, offering a practical roadmap for balancing economic growth with sustainability across the African continent.
