Zimbabwe’s major dams are now full and spilling, raising fears of flooding in downstream communities.
The country’s national dam level average stood at 88,1 percent as of March 1, with several dams, including Tugwi-Mukosi, Lake Mutirikwi, Zhovhe , Lungwala ,Ngwenya ,Tuli Makwe, Moza, Masholomoshe and Exchange now full and spilling.
In a statement on Wednesday, Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) spokesperson Mrs Marjorie Munyonga said downstream communities should be on high alert.
“We are pleased with the rising dam levels, which will improve our water security position,” said Mrs Munyonga.
“However, we are also aware of the risk of flooding in downstream communities and are working closely with stakeholders to raise awareness and prevent any potential disasters.
“We welcome the improved water security, but we also need to be mindful of the potential risks associated with full dams.”
