THE Government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting university students from sexual abuse, discrimination and exploitation within institutions of higher learning.

In an interview with ZTN on Thursday, Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development Minister Ambassador Frederick Shava said authorities are fully aware of reports of sexual abuse targeting university students and have zero tolerance for such conduct.

He said any lecturer, university staff member or student found guilty of abusing students will face the full wrath of the law.

The Government has introduced several measures aimed at eliminating abuse in tertiary institutions.

These efforts also extend to students living with disabilities, with the minister stating that all students, regardless of physical ability, must receive equal treatment and access to resources.

In addition to tackling abuse and discrimination, Government has rolled out support programmes targeting students from vulnerable communities and disadvantaged backgrounds.

Initiatives like ‘learn as you earn’ are playing a vital role in enabling disadvantaged students to complete their studies despite financial hardships.

The minister reiterated that Government does not condone any form of segregation in the education sector and remains focused on creating a safe, inclusive and supportive environment for all learners.
