AS Zimbabwe commemorates 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), a local women’s rights organisation, Unassailable, is helping victims get free counselling.

The group consists of a team of therapists, psychologists and counsellors.

Unassaible also said its goal is to build a society free from all forms of violence against women.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail Online, the organisation’s founder and director, Ms Deone Dingwiza, said they have put in place plans to help raise awareness to as many women as possible during the 16 Days of Activism against GBV.

“Currently, we are working on having our safe shelter to help victims of gender-based violence in our society.

“We are open to partnerships with like-minded organisations. Our goal is to see a violent-free society,” she said.

Ms Dingwiza said they are working on addressing the root cause of violence and breaking the cycle of domestic abuse.

“As Unassailable, we encourage women to be independent and learn skills to make their own money.

“We offer self-defence classes conducted by fitness trainers and martial artists. We also help them find a safe shelter in cases where they would have run away from the perpetrator or abuser,” she said.

She urged Government to continue protecting the rights of women and help solve deep-rooted social problems.

“What is required is not only a strong legal support network, but also opportunities for economic independence, essential education and awareness, alternative accommodation and a change in the attitude and mindset of society.”
