Retired Warrant Officer Class One Lancelot Taruona Chigwere, who was declared a provincial hero after his death on Friday last week, was buried at the Harare Provincial Heroes Acre on Tuesday, with Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Harare Metropolitan, Senator Charles Tawengwa, officiating the ceremony.

In his stirring address, Senator Tawengwa paid tribute to Cde Chigwere, praising his unwavering dedication to the liberation and service of Zimbabwe.

“We gather here today to bid farewell and pay our final respects to a true hero, a freedom fighter and a pillar of our nation’s history. It is with great sadness in our hearts that we mourn the loss, but also with immense pride that we celebrate the life and legacy of a liberation hero,” he said.

Minister Tawengwa said President Mnangagwa saw it fit that Cde Chigwere be buried with the honour of a liberation war hero because he dedicated his life to serving and liberating his country.

He added that the nation owed it to Cde Chigwere and all the brave men and women who fought alongside him to uphold the ideals of the liberation struggle.

“They are not only historical figures, but symbols of courage, resilience, and the unwavering pursuit of justice. Their spirits live on in our hearts, and their life’s work will continue to inspire the new generations,” he said.

Cde Chigwere was born on January 17, 1958, in Buhera District.

He joined the liberation struggle in 1977 and became a member of the Zimbabwe National Army after independence and was first posted to Ordinance Supply Depot and attached to the Army Clothing Factory as an administrator.

In 1999, he was posted to the Army Headquarters Ordinance Directorate as Chief Clerk.

He retired from the army in 2011 and was a holder of many medals such as the Independence, liberation, 10-year service, long service and exemplary, Mozambique campaign and DRC campaign medals.
