THE Harare City Council is satisfied with preparations for the 44th SADC Summit, which will held on August 17-18 in Harare.

The local authority is working with line ministries to beautify the capital.

Speaking during a recent full council meeting, Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume said preparations for the regional indaba are progressing well.

“Preparations are going on well. We are almost ready to host the summit, with some work being done day and night,” he said.

“Vendors are being removed from the streets, roads are being marked and installation of streetlights is ongoing. Traffic lights have been revamped, buildings are being repainted, while security at recreational facilities is being improved.”

The Town House is also expected to be renovated, but no work has started as yet.

Chairperson of the subcommittee on Town House renovations and beautification, Councillor Jane Bingari, accused the procurement department of not taking the work seriously as they are yet to purchase equipment needed for the project.

“The team in the procurement department does not want any progress; they only push for things from which they stand to benefit.

“They delayed submitting their request to PRAZ, yet they know that this is a process that takes time,” he said.
