A Harare woman sought the court’s protection from her neighbour, whom she accuses of coming to her house with a knife and threatening to kill her.

Mrs Jane Mubayi sought a protection order against Mr Jeriphanos Chikore on Tuesday at Harare Civil Court.

She accused Mr Chikore of assaulting her and calling her names, threatening to kill her.

“He was saying I have AIDS and I am the one who killed my husband. He insults me in front of people badmouthing me with words that hurt me,” she said.

“He is in the habit of coming to my house with a knife threatening to kill me and rape me. On Sunday, he came to my church and told the congregation that I should secure a place at the graveyard because he is killing my children and me soon.”

She expressed concern over her children’s well-being, highlighting that she had to transfer her children from their schools because of Mr Chikore’s threats.

Ms Mubayi said her children were now scared of stepping outside the house and she could not even leave them alone at home.

In his defence, Mr Chikore denied the allegations, accusing Ms Mubayi of always reporting false statements to the police.

“I don’t verbally abuse her. In January, she accused me of attempted rape and I was arrested and spent a month in prison,” he said. “She came with 15 witnesses and army cars to cause my arrest me.”

Magistrate Mrs Sharon Mashavire granted Ms Mubayi the protection order and warned Mr Chikore not to issue death threats against her and never to visit her premises.
