A Harare woman sought a protection order against her husband of 32 years whom she accuses of abusing her verbally and mentally.

Getrude Murenje told the Harare Civil Court on Wednesday that her husband Petros Murenje has been insulting and assaulting her for the past 32 years.

“My husband changed character from when he paid lobola to my family. He started drinking everyday, smoking weed and when he comes home he assaults me.

“He calls me a witch and he insults me with vulgar words. I have suffered in this marriage. I didn’t divorce him because I am a well-cultured woman and I was trying to secure my marriage.

“I still love my husband, but with his behaviour now, we have grandchildren and he is not even changing. I want him to stop abusing me emotionally and verbally,” she said.

In his defence, Petros said he forgets anything that he does when he is drunk.

“I fail to remember what happens when I am drunk so I get surprised every time my wife tells me that I would have assaulted her the previous night.

“I get so embarrassed when my wife tells me that and I have tried to leave alcohol multiple times, but I have failed,” he said.

Magistrate Ms Meenal Naratam granted Getrude a protection order and advised her to report Petros to the police if he assaults her again.
