The Government has said those smuggling goods into the country will face a harsh jail term of two to five years.

Speaking during a press briefing in Harare on Wednesday, the Permanent Secretary for Presidential Affairs in the Office of the President Engineer Tafadzwa Muguti said the crackdown was part of broader efforts to promote stability and the growth of local companies.

He said as the festive season approached, the Government was going to deploy intergovernmental agencies at all border posts to guard against smuggling of goods, which has led to the closure of local companies and shops.

“Many companies and shops have closed because of the rife smuggling of goods into the country. We will be arresting anyone who smuggles goods into this country and distorts the Zimbabwean economy.

“So this December, we are going to have intergovernmental agencies deployed at all our major border posts to ensure that we have no smuggled goods coming in,” he said.

Engineer Muguti said local companies were capable of meeting demand for goods and services.
