New history book launched

series of textbooks written for the Junior Certificate History syllabus.
The Ministry of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture approved the textbooks in 2009.
Focus on History Book 1 Second Edition goes an extra mile in providing an in-depth and comprehensive study of the subject to students and lays the foundation for them in their studies of the subject.
It also adopts a local and Afrocentric approach in teaching students about historic events that occurred in Zimbabwe and across the African continent.
Chapter 1 befittingly starts with an introduction to history looking at areas like the reasons behind studying history, evidence in history, written and oral among others.
Chapter 2 goes a step further by introducing students to Early Civilisations in Africa dating back to the Stone Age, the origins of man, to the Iron Age, among other areas. Ancient Egypt occupies Chapter 3 looking at how Egyptians practised agricultural methods, domesticated animals, and developed their early skills right up to the Christian Egypt civilisation.
Southern African societies, under which Zimbabwe falls, make up the gist of the fourth chapter as well as how the San and Khoi Khoi originated and spread, giving rise to new communities, establishing social and economic systems and political organisations.
If ever there is always a fascinating part of history it is about the Great Zimbabwe and this is dealt with in Chapter 6 of the book tracing the early Zimbabwe states, which gave rise to the Great Zimbabwe, after which this country is named.
The book looks at the Constitution of Zimbabwe looking back to the time of the Lancaster House Constitution, the Executive, the Judiciary, Parliament, the Public Service Commission, the national flag and the National Anthem, among others.
The book has revision exercises as well as a glossary to test and help students in their comprehension.
It is enhanced by illustrations, which helps students in having a graphic understanding of the subject.
The book was launched at the just-ended Zimbabwe International Book Fair together with other titles like Focus on English Course Books 1-4, Economic Geography, Dynamics of O-Level Physical Geography and ynamics of A-Level Geography.
