NEW: Illegal immigrant, baby drown while trying to cross into Zimbabwe

A foreign national trying to cross the border into Zimbabwe illegally together with her eleven-months-old baby drowned in the Limpopo River on Thursday after the boat that was ferrying them capsized.

According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the unidentified foreign national was in the company of the boat owners, who disappeared from the scene soon after the incident.

“The ZRP is investigating the circumstances in which a foreign national and her eleven-months-old baby drowned along Limpopo River, Beitbridge, on April 21, 2022 while being assisted to illegally cross the border into Zimbabwe by some men who were using a boat which then capsized,” said the police.

“The men disappeared soon after the incident.”
