STRONGER collaboration and synergies among ministries and departments are crucial in ensuring true digital transformation in the agriculture sector.
This was said by Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Minister Tatenda Mavetera while handing over 50 laptops to the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development in Harare on Monday.
“To achieve true digital transformation within our agricultural sector, it is essential for ministries to collaborate seamlessly towards shared goals,” said Minister Mavetera.
“The synergy between the Ministry of ICT, Postal and Courier Services and the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development is crucial for successfully implementing technological advancements across all aspects of farming operations.”
By combining efforts and expertise from both ministries, she said, the Government can develop joint initiatives that leverage technology effectively in addressing key challenges faced by farmers.
The computers are expected to provide a gateway for agricultural extension officers to access vital information on best practices in agriculture through online resources.
Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Dr Anxious Masuka said ICT could help farmers make informed decisions.
“There is no doubt ICT is the Vision 2030 accelerator, as it facilitates the collection and analysis of agricultural data, which allows farmers to make informed decisions regarding crop selection, disease prevention strategies and pest management,” said Dr Masuka.
“By leveraging technology to manage data effectively, farmers can proactively address issues that may arise during their farming operations.
“ICT also leads to improved productivity by enabling precision farming techniques that optimise resource utilisation such as water usage or fertiliser distribution accurately tailored to specific crop requirements.”
