Concerns over the future of Insindiso YamaNazaretha Indlunkulu King of Gospel, a Zionist gospel group, arose following the tragic passing of its leader, Reverend Joel Maphosa, on May 24, 2020. His death came at a critical time when his voice was greatly needed amid the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic.

Adding to the sorrow, Reverend Maphosa’s burial took place during the lockdown, preventing numerous followers from bidding him a proper farewell.

However, the late leader’s strong foundation in leadership has provided gospel music lovers and followers of the group with assurance for the future. Reverend Maphosa’s enduring legacy includes his close partnership with his brother Mhlengi Maphosa, who has now taken over leadership of the group.

Additionally, a significant development occurred in 2019 when Reverend Maphosa formed an all-female group, with his wife Thabiso Moyo assuming leadership. This proactive move ensured continuity and stability within the group, a year before Reverend Maphosa’s passing.

In separate interviews, both Maphosa and Moyo put emphasis on the enduring legacy of the late leader.

“My brother’s legacy shall live on; men like him do not die but live beyond the grave. Everything is progressing smoothly, thanks to the strong foundation he laid,” said Maphosa.

“We miss Rev Maphosa so much; he was a father, husband, and an exemplary leader. He was always jovial and caring. We have three children together, and life has been challenging since his departure,” said Moyo, affectionately known as MaDewa.

She highlighted that the major challenge has been financial constraints.

“There are times we go to bed on empty stomachs, but we find solace in knowing that God cares for orphans and widows, and we are holding on steadfastly.”

Her message to the group’s fans is that while the main voice of Rev Maphosa is gone, his music will endure as they continue where he left off.

“We are the children of Rev Maphosa, whom he taught, and we have embraced his teachings wholeheartedly. As his fans mourn, we offer them hope and words of comfort. We are deeply grateful for the warm welcome we have received from them,” she added.

Maphosa also lamented the lack of proper management and promoters as part of their challenges. However, he expressed satisfaction with how they have embraced digital platforms to promote their brand.

Since Reverend Maphosa’s passing, Insindiso YamaNazaretha has released four albums that continue the group’s signature style and commentary — Ukugula Kungaphela, Edwaleni Eladatshulwayo, Ngiphe Baba Udondolo, and their latest offering, Sisebusweni Bakho. Each album underscores the group’s commitment to their unique musical tradition and profound thematic exploration.

ABantwana BeNsindiso YamaNazaretha has also released five albums – Sizowela Kanjani (2020), Ngicel’ukuvuma (2021), Wethembekile Jehovah (2022), Sekuyabonakala (2023), and their latest, Libekiwe.
