NEW: Makunde wants early netball World Cup preps

Gems coach Lloyd Makunde believes the recent unveiling of the 2023 World Cup logo by Netball South Africa signals the need to step up preparations for the global tournament.

Cape Town will host the next Netball World Cup.

The Gems have been inactive since returning from the 2019 Netball World Cup in Liverpool, England, where they had a fairytale run.

It has made worse by the current coronavirus pandemic.

“As it is, we cannot do anything except to sit back and let the Government and relevant offices do what is needed for the games to return.

“The long breaks are not good for us,” said Makunde.

“After our first appearance (the World Cup), we have an image to protect and that means we need to work harder than last time.”

The Gems finished eighth during their maiden appearance at the global netball showpiece.

The 2023 competition will run under the theme “Now is the time to rise” and will feature 16 nations.

South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Sports Nocawe Mafu said hosting the tournament in Africa presents endless opportunities for the African girl-child.

“It will give them a chance to personally see that their dreams can indeed come true if they are in the right path and as well inspire them to become leaders and role models of tomorrow,” Mafu said.

Netball South Africa have also registered a company under the name Netball World Cup 2023, where apparel and other accessories will be available for sale as part of efforts to promote and create hype around the tournament.
