The Marange diamonds are expected to go under the hammer today at the lucrative inaugural Dubai Diamond Exchange, following the scrapping of the illegal economic sanctions by the European Union last year, a senior Government official has said.
The country has already sold its diamonds twice at Antwerp, yet another viable gems market in Belgium, following the lifting of the economic embargo.
In an interview on Friday, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development, Professor Francis Gudyanga, said about 395 000 carats have been sent to Dubai and the auction was expected to close on Thursday.
Prof Gudyanga said all the mining companies in Chiadzwa contributed to the Dubai parcel.
“We have sent a consignment of about 395 000 carats to Dubai and as you know this is our first sale that’s why we have sent a small consignment. We are testing that market.”
Prof Gudyanga said 15 percent of the 395 000 carats were made up of the gem and near gem while the rest comprised of industrial quality.
“We are expecting a good sale, the Dubai market is mainly from India, because it is about two hours flight from Mumbai. So the Indians will find it easier to go to Dubai than to any other market,” he said.
