MASVINGO CITY COUNCIL is seeking assistance from Government and Geo Pomona Waste Management to establish a modern waste management system in the city.

This follows a visit by a delegation of councillors and management officials to the Geo Pomona facilities to learn about advanced waste management practices.

Masvingo City Council’s acting director of health services Mrs Sithabile Matava highlighted the city’s ongoing waste management challenges and emphasised the need for modern technology.

“We are facing significant environmental challenges related to waste management,” she said.

“Currently, we are using a dumpsite to dispose of waste, but due to rising environmental concerns, we aim to transition to an engineered landfill.

“The process has already begun, and our visit to Pomona was intended to gain insights into their waste management strategies and landfill operations.”

Mrs Matava expressed confidence that the knowledge acquired during the tour would help improve the city’s waste management system.

“Our visit to Pomona has given us a better understanding of how to manage a landfill efficiently,” she said.

“Now, we will assess the insights gained and work towards addressing the waste management challenges in Masvingo. We are also looking to Geo Pomona for further support in this area.”

Providing an update on ongoing construction at the Geo Pomona site, CEO and executive chairperson Dr Delish Nguwaya highlighted progress made so far.

“The sorting plant has been hot-commissioned by Turkish engineers,” he said.

“There is still a lot of work to be done, and we plan to employ 150 workers to operate the sorting plant alone.”

Dr Nguwaya also revealed that Geo Pomona is now shifting its focus to developing a waste-to-energy plant, with construction scheduled to begin in June.

“We are now preparing for the waste-to-energy project, which is set to commence in June,” he said.

Masvingo City Council hopes to implement some of the lessons from the visit to enhance its waste management efforts and address the city’s growing environmental concerns.
