A series of events and live mbira performances are being held across the globe as people from diverse backgrounds and cultures celebrate Zimbabwe’s own traditional musical instrument, commonly known as the ‘mbira’.

The month of September has been selected to be the Mbira Month, a 30-day, global celebration of this musical instrument, which has been referred to as a “telephone to the ancestral spirits.”

Mbira Month provides an international platform for celebrating and sharing traditional spiritual aspects of Zimbabwean shona culture with the rest of the world.

A series of events, among them lessons, meditations, public concerts, informal presentations, and get-togethers for mbira players are being held across the globe.

Zvikomborero Chikohwa, who teaches mbira music and culture in Antwerp, Belgium, said in most European countries, the mbira is appreciated by people from different cultures and races.

“When I first came here two years ago, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that a lot of people from different cultures and races are very much interested in learning the mbira. I am holding public lectures as part of the Mbira Month celebration and I am pleased to say that a lot of interest in mbira music and culture has been shown,” said Chikohwa.
