The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) on Friday held a consultative stakeholder meeting to review amendments to the Dangerous Drugs (Production of Cannabis for Medicinal and Scientific Use) Regulations under Statutory Instrument 62 of 2018.
In 2018, Zimbabwe approved regulations that allowed cannabis cultivation strictly for medical and scientific purposes, aimed at boosting economic growth and diversifying the agricultural sector.
Zimbabwe is one of the first countries in Africa to legalise the production of medicinal cannabis.
In an interview with The Sunday Mail on the sidelines of the meeting, MCAZ Head of Licensing and Enforcement Ms Caroline Dandira-Samatanga said the meeting seeks to discuss aspects that need to be realigned with the law.
“We are gathered here to discuss the amendment of the dangerous drugs regulations for cannabis production meant for medicinal use.
“So we have invited stakeholders to talk about certain aspects that need to be realigned as we align with international regulations.
“We have stakeholders like our government and institutions like the Agriculture Ministry, we also have licenced producers as well as African American producers,” she said.
